The Sumatra is a breed of chicken native to the island of Sumatra. They are primarily an ornamental breed kept for their beautiful plumage.

The breed is considered a primitive one and retains a strong flying ability.

The chicks hatch black and white but within a few months turn solid black.

The hens are poor layers but usually hatch a large brood and raise most of the chicks that they hatch. The cocks are territorial and sometimes will drive off the young cock birds.
